Figuring it out for ourselves
Taking the Lead
As we grow up, one of the hardest transitions we have to make is understanding how to decide things independently with real confidence. It gets especially challenging when we get used to people telling us what to do, so much and so often.
Over time, allowing someone to take the reins of our lives can only lead to more challenges that stem from indecision. This is why discovering what works best for yourself, and anyone involved, is one of the most instrumental things we can learn.
That’s where values come into play. Values are the fundamental beliefs that give us the ability to achieve self-direction.
They are the personal signposts we create that allow us to guide our attitudes and actions. Knowing what your values are is like having a set of tools you can use to stay on track of who you want to be and where you want to go.
Without them, taking the lead in your own life is not so easy. Thankfully, figuring out your values offers many things like the eight benefits listed below.
1. Improved Self-Confidence
When we truly understand what matters to us on a personal level, it gets a lot easier to know where we stand. Because if our choices are founded on things that are genuinely helpful, we can feel more confident that our decisions are coming from the right intentions.
Furthermore, taking the courage to constantly act in line with your values only promotes greater assuredness in yourself. While there is no shortcut to achieving your highest level of confidence instantly, you can improve it by living out your values on a day-by-day basis.
2. Enhanced Problem-Solving
One extremely beneficial thing we gain from knowing our values is that they can help us deal with problems in a better way. In times in which we find ourselves struggling with complex issues or misunderstandings, our values can be the key to discerning the best choice to make at the time.
In the spur of the moment, it can be very tempting to react impulsively to certain situations without a second thought. However, taking the time to reflect on what you truly believe can actually allow you to adjust your perspective and come up with a practical solution that works well for everyone involved.
3. Healthier Habits
When it comes to prioritizing our growth and sense of well-being, values can be the key to dropping some of the behaviors that do not positively serve us. They can almost immediately act as a personal reminder of the kind of lifestyle we want and the proper habits to get us there.
Because your habits are the small actions you repeat regularly that play an essential role in your overall health, energy, and mindset. That’s why building your habits based on values related to the kind of person you want to be can be the most empowering thing you can do to take control of your life.
4. Increased Motivation
Staying on top of what we aim to achieve with our systems and routines is not easy to do in a perfectly consistent manner. Nonetheless, relying on what we value most can be the greatest motivator in remaining committed to our long-term goals.
In any process that requires healthy striving, it is only likely for setbacks, distractions, and problems to arise. But you can rest assured that staying true to your beliefs can keep you grounded regardless of whatever gets thrown your way.
5. Greater Self-Direction
Another benefit we gain from knowing our values is that they allow us to develop trust in ourselves and our actions at a mature and responsible level. This is incredibly useful when it comes to mapping out your objectives for both short-term and long-standing priorities.
When you can fully rely on yourself and your abilities, you open yourself up to new avenues that you might have never even considered before. In doing so, you are taking charge of your life on your terms and balancing out your actions every step of the way with values that you can always rely on for guidance.
6. Effective Communication
One undeniable thing about values is that they strengthen our backbone. Whether that involves speaking with more assertiveness or more compassion, matching our actions to our beliefs allows us to notice when we or others have crossed the line.
Staying attuned to our deep-seated principles keeps us aware of our boundaries that require our constant protection. This teaches us how to communicate more effectively, which builds stronger connections based on mutual respect and accountability.
7. Reduced Stress
Knowing our values can also allow us to focus on a proactive approach to combat stress and anxiety. We do this by turning to them in the face of chaos to find the calm we need to stay conscious and practical.
Studies have shown repeatedly that those who think about their highest values during a tedious activity can lower any strain or intensity they feel significantly. This goes to show that taking the time to remember what’s most important can put the stressor into perspective.
8. Better Resilience
Values enable us to stay determined in the face of obstacles. No matter how much we end up having to overcome, they point the way forward to keep believing in ourselves and what we can do.
In many ways, they strengthen our resilience as we continue to persist toward what we hope to achieve. This can turn into a practice of constantly moving ahead in a process that involves learning and failing over and over again.
