A Poem for You
Story and Background
There’s no denying that technology has made our lives easier—and in remarkable ways. For instance, I still remember the first time I learned to use a search engine back in grade school, during a time when it wasn’t unusual to hear someone ask, “Google? What does that even mean?”
Fast forward to today, and we’re surrounded by countless tools and ways to connect with each other. Clearly, we’ve made incredible progress, and there’s plenty to be thankful for when it comes to how easily we can now communicate with the world.
Still, I’d be lying if I said I never feel the side effects of too much screen time. Sometimes, I catch myself instinctively reaching for my phone like it’s a security blanket, instead of seeking a more genuine connection with the person in front of me.
In those moments, I notice my focus and productivity dip as I chase the next video, the next post, or just… the next thing. When you really think about it, it’s a strange habit—this tendency to kill time in ways that might seem completely absurd to someone from the past.
So this raises the question: what are we killing time for, exactly? Is it really just time we’re wasting—or could it be something more meaningful?
Of course, breaking away from these habits isn’t easy, especially when they’re all around us. But maybe we can start being more mindful of our thoughts, what we consume, and how it shapes our perspectives and behavior.
Hopefully, by guarding our attention spans more carefully, we might discover just how deeply it can improve our everyday experience.
Into the Rabbit Hole
Scroll. Scroll. Scroll.
Into the rabbit hole
Into another’s hold
Into the world, we go
View. View. View.
Absorb anything that’s new
Lock eyes with what is due
Hypnosis at the cue
Fill. Fill. Fill.
Flood the mind against one’s will
Innate inventiveness it kills
Evading moments one is still
Distract. Distract. Distract.
Watch the mirror tinted black
Shining all that one could lack
Disempowering any act
It is the mindless scroll that shatters
Any wondrous thing of matter
This vice of passivity that scatters
Innate content with constant chatter
Scan. Scan. Scan.
Shorten this attention span
Fragment focus meant to stand
Graze mere surface with this hand
Shortened breath
Shallowed depth
Conscious death
Endless breadth
In this bizarre
Surreal environment
This virtual place
Where all is bent
Down. Down. Down.
Into the rabbit hole
Surrendering all control
Into the world we scroll
