The Heart of Europe

It’s funny, when I first told people that I was moving to Prague, the general response I received was confusion. The truth is, years ago, the city wasn’t quite as popular as it is today.

In my circles, not many seemed to have heard of the golden city of a hundred spires. Of course, we can completely say the opposite when we consider how big it’s become in the world of tourism.

Prague is now one of the most go-to travel destinations in Europe. Its location at the center of the continent makes it an ideal place for exploring more countries in the region. So it’s no secret that travelers like to combine Prague with Vienna and Budapest, for example.

But, to be honest, there’s just so much more you can do even inside the Czech Republic itself. The country is known for its many attractions outside the city, which you can add to your travel itinerary.

So if you’re looking for a more well-rounded adventure, I’d suggest doing a mix of both. Here are 10 amazing things to do in Prague that I highly recommend!

1. Evening Boat Cruise

In my experience, this is definitely one of the best ways to experience Prague at night. When the city is fully lit up, you get the best views of Prague Castle, Charles Bridge, Petrin Tower, and so much more along the Vltava River.

From dinner to parties to lunches, you can choose from different cruise options according to what you’re looking for. Whether you go with friends or your significant other, this is undoubtedly one activity worth saving for one of your evenings in the city.

2. Klementinum Library

If I had to pick one of my favorite views of Prague, the Klementinum would absolutely go to the top of my list. This experience will take you through the history of the Klementinum Astronomical Tower and its beautiful Baroque library.

I have to say that while I still have more libraries to explore around the world, this is, without a doubt, the most beautiful one I’ve seen by far. The sweeping views atop the tower also give you a rush I can’t describe. It really feels like you’re touching a piece of history when you’re up there.

3. Medieval Dinner

As touristy as it sounds, I think this is such a unique experience worth signing up for because it fully immerses you in Prague’s history and culture. This unforgettable medieval dinner comes with traditional Czech food, music, and a special live performance.

My favorite memory of this was the delicious beer and the talented dancers moving impressively with loops of fire. I also loved how the atmosphere mentally takes you back to that period with the dimly lit tavern, candles, and rustic underground setting.

4. Cěsky Krumlov

This is another thing to do in Prague that is not generally known and one that I only stumbled upon through suggestions from Czechs while living in the city. Cěsky Krumlov is a beloved town that locals visit often, especially on the weekends.

What’s great is that there are plenty of buses that travel to the town regularly, and it only takes a couple of hours to get there. If you’re looking for a little romantic getaway, I can confidently say that this quaint, fairytale village will definitely deliver.

5. Pub Crawl

As ridiculous as this might sound, I still haven’t found a pub crawl nightlife that matches what Prague has to offer. There are just so many pubs, bars, lounges, and clubs to explore all over the city, which is why signing up for one is worth doing so, especially if you want to see a variety of stops and meet people along the way.

This is such a social experience, and I highly recommend it if you’re looking to celebrate or enjoy the city with friends. There are just so many to choose from, so keep in mind the kind of music and vibes you’re looking for.

6. Classical Music

Of course, Prague has plenty of venues featuring classical music, theatrical performances, and symphony orchestras throughout the year. So if you’re looking for a more classy experience, then I would recommend adding this to the list.

While I’m not much of an opera fan, I have to admit that my first and only time seeing an Opera show in the State House is one that I will never forget. The interior of the buildings themselves is incredible to look at, complemented by the live music, making the whole evening more mesmerizing.

7. Old Town History Tour

One of the coolest things about visiting Prague is that you really feel like you’ve traveled to a different time. Personally, I didn’t feel this more than when I was standing in the middle of Old Town Square and getting a tour of its long history.

I think this is, without a doubt, one of the best ways to get to understand a culture, especially when you get to walk through the locations where things actually happened. From rebellions to fires and plagues, add this to your list for a more enriching learning experience.

8. Naplavka Markets

This is yet another activity that I’m not sure many tourists are aware of, but it was really popular for locals living in Prague. Every weekend, markets are propped up along Naplavka, where you can enjoy plenty of food, drinks, and items to buy for cooking, decorating, and more.

When I lived there, I loved walking down to the river, grabbing a coffee at one of the stands, and enjoying the atmosphere. It was also great to listen to live music and street performers throughout the morning bustle.

9. Castle Tour

Of course, you can’t visit Prague without seeing perhaps its most iconic attraction of all—the castle and surrounding complex. Built in the ninth century and now a famous UNESCO World Heritage site, it is absolutely what makes the city so unique compared to other European capitals.

I couldn’t get enough of seeing the view of it in the center of the city, along the bridges across the Vltava River. The photos you take anywhere in this area are bound to be gorgeous, colorful, and eye-catching.

10. Christmas Markets

If you’re hoping to come to Prague during the holiday season, I highly recommend adding the Christmas Markets to your list of activities. It’s no secret how beautiful Prague’s Staroměstské náměstí looks on a regular day, but during Christmas, it’s on another level for sure.

During this time, colorful market stalls and tents pop up throughout the city and are filled with all kinds of savory treats, warm drinks, and Christmas gift ideas. As the days get closer to the 24th of December, a large tree is decorated in the center of it all, lighting up all of Old Town Square.
